The Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge is made up of eight land units along the Minnesota River. The Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge also oversees a 13-county Wetland Management District, which contains 18 Waterfowl Production Areas open to the public.

Park is great for cross country skiing, mountain bikers, horse back riders, bird watchers and hikers. Trails run through hilly, wooded area, very challenging. 19.4 km trackset. 19.4 km skate-ski. Mostly expert level trails. Warming house. Maps along trail. Ski pass required. Ski passes sold at trailhead. 19.4 km trackset. The extensive forests make this a great park for woodland songbirds. In 2004, the park was designated as an "Important Bird Area" by the National Audubon Society.

340-acre natural environment/wildlife refuge. Offers cross country skiing, hiking trails, archery range, picnic area, shelter, equestrian trail and snowmobiling. 130 species of birds have been identified here.

In the fall of 2005, a young female bald eagle was discovered building a nest at Ritter Farm Park in Lakeville. As of May 2008, Lakeville’s pair of bald eagles appear to be caring for at least one new eaglet. Last year, their first as a nesting pair, the two successfully hatched two eaglets that grew up, learned to fly, and left the nest. The eagles have been spotted in various locations throughout Lakeville in every season.
